Andrew Thomas n’en est pas à son premier livre chez Osprey et la qualité du travail a toujours été au rendez-vous. C’est encore le cas ici. Certes, l’histoire de la chasse aux V1 ne peut pas être aussi intense que les combats contre la Luftwaffe, mais pour les Britanniques, il s’agit d’un chapitre majeur dans l’histoire du Royaume-Uni de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Un volume de chez Osprey traitant de la chasse aux V1 trouvera donc sans doute son lectorat. Si l’intensité des combats entre pilotes est nécessairement absente, au moins disposons-nous d’un florilège d’avions de combat qui ont été utilisés contre les bombes volantes : pas moins d’une dizaine d’avions différents sont représentés dans les pages de profils, dont des avions américains, car la participation américaine est aussi abordée, même si cela est resté une bataille que la RAF a su mener et gagner seule ou presque. En effet, la chasse aux V1 a engendré 154 as de diverses nationalités, et cette arme de terreur a en fait un bilan plutôt mitigé, voire négatif : car les trois quarts des V1 lancés contre les îles britanniques n’ont jamais atteint leur cible, abattus avant de l’atteindre par la DCA anglaise ou surtout par les chasseurs alliés. Mais ceux qui sont passés ont néanmoins pris la vie à 6000 Britanniques. Ce chiffre semble important, mais il est en fait dérisoire au regard des terribles pertes que la population allemande subit dans le même temps de jour comme de nuit sous les bombardiers alliés : cela se compte en 1944-1945 en centaines de milliers de vies et non en quelques milliers comme ici. En tant qu’arme de représailles, le V1 a donc montré sa totale inefficacité contre la Grande-Bretagne, car les Allemands n’ont jamais su saturer les défenses aériennes alliées. Ce livre vient ici nous le rappeler justement, même si cela restait un "sport" dangereux pour les pilotes. On retrouve tous les ingrédients d’un bon Osprey, avec de nombreux témoignages et photos.
