Suite logique du Air Vanguard N°5 traitant des Albatros D.I et D.II, cet Osprey nous propose une présentation très poussée du successeur, le D.III. Cette étude est articulée comme l’ouvrage précédent et nous offre une synthèse à la fois précise et instructive, en tout cas pour tous ceux qui n’ont que des notions générales sur l’aviation de la Première Guerre mondiale. Même si l’Albatros D.III fut un avion de chasse largement construit et s’il est devenu une pièce maîtresse dans l’inventaire de l’aviation allemande et austro-hongroise en 1917, cette version n’apportait en fait que peu d’amélioration par rapport aux D.I et D.II récemment mis en service mais construits en petit nombre. Cela permit néanmoins aux Allemands de remporter des succès considérables au cours du printemps 1917. Cette période faste fut de courte durée pour cet appareil, car quelques semaines plus tard, le D.III avait déjà atteint sa limite de potentiel face à l’introduction de nouveaux chasseurs du côté allié. Ceci étant, il servira jusqu’à la fin de la guerre.
Ceux qui ont aimé le Air Vanguard N°5 sur les D.I et D.II apprécieront tout autant ce volume consacré au D.III, bien fait et bien écrit.
