Comme nous célébrons les cent ans du début de la Première Guerre mondiale, ce livre vient à point nommé pour nous rappeler que la guerre aérienne est née pendant ce conflit. La France a été l’une des trois nations, avec l’Empire britannique et l’Empire allemand, à avoir développé des machines de guerre performantes et en grande quantité entre 1914 et 1918.

En ce qui concerne cette collection, si ce n’est pas le premier titre qui met en opposition deux chasseurs de la Grande Guerre — en fait c’est le quatrième — , c’est le premier qui remonte aussi loin dans le temps, en 1916, avec cette première génération de chasseurs. Bien écrit, bien illustré, il met en relief ces deux antagonistes qui ont fait les premières heures de gloire de l’aviation militaire et furent à l’origine de nombreux mythes.

Jon Guttman, auteur reconnu dans le domaine de l’aviation militaire de la Première Guerre mondiale, a sollicité la contribution d’autres auteurs comme David Méchin et Christophe Cony pour la partie française et de Norman Franks pour la partie anglaise, tous trois fins connaisseurs de cette période ; le résultat était donc assuré. Seul petit défaut, il manque un lexique pour les abréviations utilisées pour le grades, en particulier français, qui peuvent paraître un peu hermétiques pour les néophytes — surtout anglophones — et l’auteur aurait pu donner une équivalence pour certains autres comme le grade de "chef d’escadron" ou de "Rittmeister" (même si ce dernier terme est plus connu) ; en effet, ces ouvrages ne sont pas lus que par les seuls spécialistes.
